Alopecia & Hair Loss

Patients suffering from alopecia and hair loss often experience discomfort in many areas of their lives, notwithstanding the self-esteem and self-confidence issues that come from losing one’s hair.

Our board-certified dermatologists at Brentwood Dermatology provide a compassionate place where patients receive expert diagnosis and personalized treatment plans for alopecia and hair loss. Let us help you find a solution that alleviates the discomfort associated with hair loss.

GENERAL

What is Alopecia?

Alopecia, also known as alopecia areata, is an autoimmune disease that causes loss of hair. Like other autoimmune diseases, the bodies’ white blood cells attack healthy cells. With alopecia areata, the bodies’ white blood cells attack hair follicles, causing the hair to fall out.

Alopecia affects people of all ages, though it most commonly affects people in their childhood and teenage years. Because hair loss in patients suffering from alopecia tends to be unpredictable, some patients may experience regrowth of the lost hair, or hair loss could be recurrent.

TYPES

Types of Alopecia

During your appointment with our board-certified dermatologists, we will inspect the area affected by hair loss to determine what type of alopecia you may be suffering from. There are three main types of alopecia:

  • Alopecia area
  • Alopecia totalis
  • Alopecia universalis

Following diagnosis, our board-certified dermatologists will create a personalized treatment plan to help alleviate the symptoms and associated discomfort to restore our patient’s quality of life. Treatment options for alopecia include:

  • Corticosteroid injections
  • Topical medications
  • Oral medications
  • Immunotherapy

The recommended treatment plan will depend on the type and severity of hair loss. We work closely with each patient to provide a complete, effective diagnosis and treatment plan.
