What is Alopecia?
Alopecia, also known as alopecia areata, is an autoimmune disease that causes loss of hair. Like other autoimmune diseases, the bodies’ white blood cells attack healthy cells. With alopecia areata, the bodies’ white blood cells attack hair follicles, causing the hair to fall out.
Alopecia affects people of all ages, though it most commonly affects people in their childhood and teenage years. Because hair loss in patients suffering from alopecia tends to be unpredictable, some patients may experience regrowth of the lost hair, or hair loss could be recurrent.
