Learn more about microneedling and how it can help you achieve your skin care goals by reading our quick guide below.
What is microneedling?
Also known as collagen induction therapy, microneedling is a rather new cosmetic treatment that’s based on the concept of regenerative healing. It’s a non-invasive procedure that uses a small pen-like device inlaid with fine needles, which pierce the skin and produce micro-injuries to the skin. This tricks the body into thinking it’s injured, which then stimulates the production of collagen and elastin.
In the few months following the microneedling treatment, the body encourages its natural healing process, and the skin becomes softer, more radiant, and younger-looking.
Microneedling FAQs
Microneedling works by using tiny needles to produce micro-injuries to skin, which trigger the body’s natural healing response and increases the production of collagen and elastin. The additional collagen and elastin improve the skin’s appearance from the inside out. Over time, a number of cosmetic concerns and skin conditions improve as the skin repairs itself.
There are numerous benefits to microneedling! For example, microneedling can even out skin tone, smooth skin texture, improve the look of dark spots and sunspots, diminish the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, reduce the pore size, improve scarring, and help with pigmentation.
We recommend microneedling to many of our patients because it can help address a wide range of irritating and troublesome skin conditions and concerns.
For example, microneedling can help address and treat skin conditions like:
- Acne scars
- Hyperpigmentation
- Stretch marks
- Sun damage
- Aging signs (wrinkles, fine lines, and dark spots)
If you have any questions about microneedling and whether it could help you address a specific skin condition, get in touch with one of our board-certified dermatologists at Brentwood Dermatology today by calling 615.377.3448.
This depends on your specific skin care goals. However, our patients often find that microneedling delivers the best results when done in a series of treatments spread out within a certain amount of weeks.
We’ve heard our patients describe the microneedling procedure pain as easy to tolerate and completely manageable. That said, we often apply a numbing cream to the skin before the microneedling procedure to alleviate any discomfort or pain.
Following a microneedling procedure, there will be some minor swelling and redness to the face, as well as some slight peeling anywhere from 1-3 days. Fortunately, microneedling has very little downtime, so you’ll be able to go about your normal activities right after. This is what makes microneedling a top treatment for those with busy lives!
For microneedling aftercare, the dermatologists at Brentwood will apply a soothing, wound-healing topical before you leave the office. Additionally, you’ll be sent home with a kit containing everything you need to use until your skin is fully back to normal.
