When to Start Botox for a Long-Lasting Youthful Complexion

Have you begun to notice fine lines and wrinkles forming on your face, even though you’re only in your 20s or 30s? Botox® can be an effective wrinkle treatment to address these premature signs of aging, but there’s a right way and a wrong way to utilize this popular cosmetic treatment in your early years.

Here’s our board-certified dermatologist’s guide on when to start using Botox for a long-lasting youthful appearance. (And what you should NOT do when using Botox to prevent fine lines and wrinkles in your 20s and 30s.)

How Does Preventive Botox Work?

Essentially, fine lines and deep wrinkles form due to the repetitive creasing of the skin. Rather than attempting to address them later in life after they’ve formed, preventive Botox helps to stop muscle movement and keep them from showing up in the first place.

Furthermore, by starting Botox early in life, you can significantly reduce the amount you may need in the future, which is one of the top benefits of preventive Botox.

When Should You Start Preventive Botox?

While there’s not a definitive age to start preventive Botox, as everyone ages differently, Brentwood Dermatology skin care specialists recommend starting this cosmetic treatment when you begin to notice frown lines, forehead lines, creases around the eyes, and lines around the mouth sticking around.

Typically, we find that most individuals start Botox around the age of 30. Some are as young as 25 but often there’s not enough fine lines and wrinkles to really provide a significant benefit at this age.

How Often Should You Get Botox?

Once you start Botox, our dermatologists recommend scheduling follow-up Botox sessions to maintain your results. In many cases, you will likely only need 2-4 sessions each year to make this treatment an on-going part of your anti-aging regimen.

Are There Any Downsides to Starting Botox Early?

While there are numerous benefits to starting Botox in your 20s and 30s, there are a few downsides that are important to consider. First, starting Botox this early can be costly, as you will likely require several sessions per year to maintain your results.

Second, if you have too much Botox done in your younger years, it may result in more signs of aging later down the line. This is because Botox stops muscle movement and after several years of your facial muscles not moving or contracting, they often weaken over time. This contributes to a flatter-looking appearance, which can age your face.

Additionally, if you halt the movement of one muscle, such as the forehead, you may begin to use other facial muscles which can contribute to new wrinkle formation.

The best way to address these issues? Be more conservative with Botox in your early years and only have as many sessions as needed to maintain your beautiful results.
