Woman Following Brentwood Dermatology’s Effective Winter Skincare Routine

Achieve a Glowing Complexion with an Effective Winter Skincare Routine

Taking care of your skin with a rejuvenating winter skincare routine is essential for promoting optimal health and vitality. During the colder months of winter, the skin is your body’s first defense against the harsh weather, and if you don’t properly take care of it, your skin can become dry, flaky, irritated, and inflamed.

To help you better take care of your skin this chilly season, follow our winter skincare routine tips! You’ll discover healthy, glowing skin and a vibrant complexion that radiates throughout the entire year.

How to Implement the Best Winter Skincare Routine

The harsh climate of winter can wreak havoc on your skin. Therefore, it’s important to switch up your everyday skincare routine to focus on including products and steps that help your skin combat the dry air, frigid temperatures, and brisk winds.

Modify Your Cleanser

Instead of using a foamy cleanser, switch your cleanser to a balm, oil, or cream. These types of cleansers are often more hydrating than a foamy, bubbly cleanser, which is essential this time of year.

Take Shorter, Lukewarm Showers

Are you someone who loves to take long, hot showers? Or relax in the evening by soaking in a steaming hot bath? Unfortunately, this is probably hurting, rather than helping, your skin during the winter months!

Hot water can strip the skin of its natural barrier, which keeps it moisturized and protects it from the harsh winter weather. Instead, focus on taking shorter, lukewarm showers that soothe the skin.

Include Daily Moisturizing in Your Winter Skincare Routine

More importantly, moisturize immediately after you shower—when your skin is damp—with a thick, rich moisturizer to lock in hydration. And remember, your skin will likely require more moisturizer in the winter months compared to the summer months.

Furthermore, we recommend swapping out your lighter lotions for a thicker cream moisturizer. If you need help choosing the right moisturizer for your winter skincare routine, visit a board-certified dermatologist for a professional recommendation!

Exfoliate Regularly

Exfoliation is important any time of the year, especially during the winter months when skin is often drier and flakier. However, it’s crucial to find a balance between exfoliating just enough to ensure all the dead skin cells are buffed away and not over-exfoliating to the extent that it amplifies dryness and irritation.

We recommend exfoliating once a week. If your skin tolerates that well, you can bump it up to twice a week for extra glowy skin.

Use a Quality Humidifier

With many homes having heating systems, such as central heating, the air inside your home may actually be more dry compared to outside. While you can’t do anything about the outside air, you can add some much-needed humidity to the air inside your home with a quality humidifier.

We recommend sleeping with a humidifier by your bed to hydrate your skin while you sleep. You’ll find that when you wake up in the morning, your skin (and nasal passages!) will feel a lot more hydrated.

Wear Sunscreen

You should wear sunscreen all year round — even in the winter! Though the temperatures may have dropped and there are fewer hours of sunlight, don’t think you can pack up your sunscreen and store it away on a bottom shelf in the bathroom.

Read our blog on why you should always wear sunscreen in the winter for more information.
