What is Surgical Dermatology?

Surgical dermatology involves the diagnosis and treatment of various conditions of the skin and surrounding tissues by several surgical, cosmetic and non-invasive surgical methods. The purpose of skin surgery is to repair and/or improve the function and cosmetic appearance of skin tissue. 

The various procedures within surgical dermatology may involve the superficial layers of the skin or extend through to the underlying layers of muscle or fat below, depending on the condition being treated.

Yes, there are different types of surgical dermatology procedures. As mentioned above, surgical dermatology, in a broad term, encompasses several different invasive and non-invasive procedures that aim to repair or improve the function/appearance of the skin.

At Brentwood Dermatology, our board-certified dermatologists perform the surgical dermatology procedures at our Brentwood clinic! Our team of doctors has advanced training in Mohs surgery and other types of dermatologic surgeries. Furthermore, we regularly perform these surgeries for our clients, so feel assured you’re receiving competent, compassionate care you can trust.

In most cases, our surgical procedures are performed on an outpatient basis using local anesthetic to excise the skin concern, providing our patients with a less-invasive surgical alternative. 

Additionally, since our surgical procedures occur at our Brentwood practice, this saves our patients valuable dollars, as there are no pricey hospital expenses involved!

Skin conditions that may require dermatologic surgery, such as surgical excision, may include:

  • Certain types of moles

Surgical dermatology is often used as a method for treating skin cancer, among other forms of treatment. For instance, surgical excision is often used to treat superficial basal cell carcinomas, while Mohs surgery may be used to treat melanoma skin cancer.
